Mental Health is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of social cohesion, economic productivity, and individual wellbeing. Yet the critical role played by informal caregivers often remains overlooked in both policy and society. These individuals contribute substantial value, both emotionally and economically, to Europe’s care systems. This year, the Headway Report provides an estimate of the economic worth of their support across the EU27+UK, underscoring the urgency of formally acknowledging and supporting their role.
At a time when Mental Health risks slipping down the political agenda, amid rising attention to issues such as defense and geopolitical security, it is vital to sustain the momentum built in recent years. Neglecting the issue of Mental Health now would mean reversing hard-won progress, with consequences for the wellbeing of millions and for Europe’s resilience.
The presentation of the Headway Mental Health Index 5.0, hosted at the European Parliament by MEP Tomáš Zdechovský, offers an opportunity to discuss the way forward. The event brings together policymakers, researchers, clinicians, caregiver associations and international organizations to discuss how Europe can maintain and strengthen its commitment to Mental Health.
